Forking a repo does not fork away the licence obligations.

A startup rebrands a GPL service as proprietary after a fork. Changing the logo and the README does not rewrite the licence that came with the code. Downstream distribution still has to face copyleft or other licence terms that attached upstream. A fork is a copy with history — not a licence reset. If the product still carries GPL-covered code, the proprietary rebrand is a marketing claim sitting on top of an unresolved compliance problem.

Fork the repo.

Licence obligations remain.
