Cyber Desk · Insight. Series: Digital disputes, as Indian courts actually see them.

Compounding talks on WhatsApp do not rewrite a non-compoundable offence by themselves.

Parties circulate a chat: settled, withdrawn, no hard feelings. Screenshots travel faster than procedure. If the offence is non-compoundable, a private settlement message does not by itself convert the statute. Courts and the Code still control what can be compounded, by whom, and how. A WhatsApp ‘settled’ sticker is evidence of talks — not a rewrite of the offence table.

‘Settled’ on chat.

The Code still decides compounding.
