Cyber Desk · Insight. Series: Digital disputes, as Indian courts actually see them.

Bank reason codes on a dispute ticket are bank language. They are not offence definitions.

A chargeback ticket carries a reason code — fraud, unauthorised, goods not received. Internal bank vocabulary. Useful for the payment network’s dispute matrix. Not a finding that Section 420 is made out. Merchants sometimes treat the word “fraud” on the ticket as proof of cheating and rush to police. The file still needs independent proof of deception, dishonest inducement, and loss. A reason code labels why the bank reversed a transaction. It does not substitute for a criminal charge sheet.

Fraud on the ticket.

Not fraud in the charge sheet — until proved.
