IP address is a lead. It is not a name on a charge sheet

2 August 2026 · Series — Digital Disputes

An IP address is a lead.

It is not a name on a charge sheet.

When someone says “the IP is his, so he posted it,” they are skipping the hard middle: subscriber records, who had the connection, shared Wi-Fi, dynamic allocation, and whether the account was even under that person’s control at that hour.

Courts and investigators may start with an IP. Attribution still has to be built.

A lead opens the file.

It does not finish the proof.

Educational note. This Insight is for awareness relating to cyber law and digital procedure. It is not legal advice and does not create an advocate–client relationship. Series: Digital disputes, as Indian courts actually see them.
